Hello my friends,
Tonight I’m back with an art journal page I created a couple of weeks ago.
This page started as a sort of experiment wanting to test my homemade modeling paste.
I was working on another project when I discovered that my modeling paste is gone (I thought I had another jar but I didn’t). Trying to order some more over the internet, I stumbled upon a tutorial - how to make modeling paste out of gesso, white (tacky) glue and… baby powder (talc)! WHAT???
Because I had all the ingredients in the house and because I wanted to finish my project I decided to give it a try and I’m really glad I did. The paste is fantastic - it holds perfectly when spread through a stencil, dries pretty quick, can be sprayed, inked, painted and is much cheaper Not to mention how lovely it smells.
So, before using it on the project I was working on, I wanted to make a test and this is the result.
I worked on a piece of watercolor paper (300 gsm) and after priming it with a coat of gesso I started painting randomly with some Faber Castell gelatos (lemon, mango, bubble gum) and after blending and drying I applied the modeling paste through a couple of stencils. When the paste was dry, I began spraying with the ColourArte Radiant Rain shimmer mists (Namorado, Autumn Leaf, Seafoam, Teal zircon). I repeated the process several times, drying after each application, until I was happy, then I sponged some heavy gesso here and there. After the gesso dried I distressed the page a bit using vintage photo and walnut stain distress ink, applied the collage elements and put the highlights with ColourArte Primary Elements (sunset glow and rose gold). I finished the page with some white and black splatters and stamped the words (Donna Downey Empowered words set) on a piece of paper, cut them out and glue them on the page.

View CommentAwesome pages!! I’ll have to give that homemade texture paste a try. Thanks!
View CommentThanks Anjuli! For an 8 fl. oz jar you’ll need 1/4 of a cup of tacky glue, 1/2 cup gesso and about 1 cup (you can add a bit more if you like a thick consistency) baby powder. It really works well! Good luck! xoxo
