Mixed media on balsa wood
Hello dear friends,
I’m back this evening with a small mixed media on balsa wood I titled “Discover”. The piece measures 4 x 9 inches.
Enjoy!
I started this mixed media on a piece of balsa wood by gluing down a leaf I made of paper clay. I covered then with a coat of white gesso the entire piece. When this has dried I added a random coat of homemade texture paste using white gesso and marble dust. I dried everything using my heating tool. For my first layer of colour I used Lindy’s Stamp Gang sprays in 3 different shades of blue. I created more depth using some alcohol inks in similar colours.
I added splatters using diluted Finnabair rust paste in red and gold and Art Alchemy acrylic paint in Light Patina. I built up the layers of splatters alternating the colours until I was happy with the result. Dried everything again and started painting my leaf using the same shades of blues and greens.
As I didn’t cover the leaf while I was working on my background it got splattered too. I didn’t worry as this added more visual texture to it as you can see in some of the photos.
For even more texture I added Finnabair Art Pebbles, art stones, micro beads and glitter using her 3D gel medium. When the glue as dry I painted them using more of the same colours. I added highlights using Light Patina, an iridescent green yellow from Pebeo and Finnabair Opal Gold Magic mica powder.
For the little bee embellishment first I stamped the bee on a scrap of gelli printed paper. I glued a big art pebble on top of it using soft gel medium and then cut the paper around using the pebble as a guide. I framed it with a bit of coiled wire that I painted with Finnabair rust paste set.
As a final touch I splattered more diluted Light Patina and white gesso I inked the edges with black Staz On ink and added the word “discover”.
Hope you liked today’s project and tutorial. Thank you so much for stopping by and don’t forget to check out my new Online Workshop. You can watch a video trailer HERE.
